Read this before you submit it
Almost every rejected senior quote breaks one of these six rules.
- ✦Check your yearbook's word limit — a lot of schools cap it around 20 words or one line.
- ✦Song lyrics and movie lines often get cut for copyright, or edited without warning.
- ✦No inside jokes an adult could read the wrong way. Advisors reject those first.
- ✦No names of teachers, staff or other students unless your school allows it.
- ✦Nothing about substances, driving, or anything that reads as a threat — instant no.
- ✦Turn it in early. Late quotes get replaced with a blank space or your school's default.
steal the method, not the quote
How to write your own senior quote
Pick your feeling first
Funny, grateful, proud or hyped. One feeling. Quotes that try to do all four end up saying nothing.
Name a real detail
The 6 a.m. bus, the corner table, your sister's car, room 214. A specific detail is what makes people say 'that's so you.'
Cut it in half
Write your line, then delete every word the sentence survives without. Short quotes are the ones people reread.
Read it out loud to one friend
If they laugh or go quiet, keep it. If they say 'wait, what does that mean?', it's not the one.
One line isn't enough.
Give senior year a whole page.
